Camping is a favorite activity and tradition in Girl Scouts. It is important that the adult has the knowledge and skills necessary to make a troop camping experience safe, fun and educational. This course will help participants relate the outdoor experience to the Council Goals, plan, implement and evaluate a camping trip with girls and understand the safety standards and guidelines for camping and related outdoor activities. It also will develop skills to be used and taught to girls ensuring a positive, fun and safe outdoor experience.
Cost: The course has a $12 fee that must accompany the registration
Who can take this course? Troop leaders, co-leaders and other registered adults who are participating in a troop out-of doors experience. One adult per troop is required to complete this training at a Girl Scouts of Western Ohio camp.
Overnight Course: A planning session with an overnight at camp in one time session. A list of camping supplies needed and instructions will be mailed one week prior to class.
Two Part Course: A four-hour planning session plus an eight-hour skill session without an overnight at camp. Instead of spending the night at camp, participants will spend the day at camp. Participants must attend both sessions to receive credit for the course.
Troop Camp Training Test Out: This option is available to volunteers who have been certified in troop camp training from another council or have extensive (3+ years) camping experience as an adult with Girl Scouts. There are two parts to this test out: 1) A written exam 2) A verbal skills test. Participants choosing this option must pass with an 85 percent score or higher. If a participant does not pass this option, then they will need to take the full course. Test outs are held at your regional Girl Scout Center. To schedule, please contact a member of adult development.
Campin Fever: What’s better than taking your troop with you to training? This learning opportunity will teach both leaders and girls basic outdoor skills. During this experience you will learn with your girls to do outdoor cooking, fire building, knot tying, Leave NoTrace and orienteering. And best of all, this experience will count as completion of Troop Camp Training. Note: This experience involves outdoor sleeping.
